    Local Organizations

    The Uma Center

    The Uma Center

The former location of my practice, the mission of the Uma Center is to strengthen and empower parents on the Palouse. They do this by supporting local practitioners who offer pregnancy and labor services, education, support groups, and other wellness services. They believe that it takes a village to raise children and that all parents, new and experienced, need support. Strong and healthy parents raise strong and healthy children.

    La leche league
Le Leche League of the Palouse

Meetings are good place to talk with other moms and find peer support for first time moms breastfeeding. La Leche League Leaders are experienced mothers who have breastfed their own babies and who have been trained and accredited by La Leche League International to help mothers and mothers-to-be with all aspects of breastfeeding. They are available by phone whenever you have breastfeeding questions or concerns.

    Useful Products

    Pumpin' Pal Super Shields

Breast pumping is pretty easy right? Erm...not so much. One of the key things I discovered is the flanges that come with breast pumps are horrible. They are too small most of time and you're beasts change in size a lot in the first year. The angle of most flanges make it so you have to be at a perfect, oh-so-uncomfortable position. I was ready to give up on the whole idea of pumping until I discovered Pumpin' Pal Super Shields. I can actually relax back using these and they fit my breasts comfortably with very little pinching when pumping. Before I thought I didn't produce enough milk to pump but when I started using Pumpin' Pals the shape of the flange actually worked to produce more milk! I was pumping 3 to 4 times more in the same amount of time AND in more comfort.

    Cycle Beads

If you track your cycle, you're probably aware of the many many different ways you can track it. If you don't like using your phone or computer to keep track and have a hard time with paper, Cycle Beads may work for you. It is a necklace of beads with different colors corresponding to different phases of your cycle. You move the ring from one bead to the next each day. This is meant for someone who has fairly regular cycles. If you have never tracked your cycle this is a easy way to start.

Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom by Christine Northup, M.D. is considered the bible of women's health. In here you will find very clear explanations of all ailments relating to women and natural processes of life. I recommend this book to all women as a way to gain greater understanding of their bodies and mind.

    Online Support & Resources

Online Postpartum Mood Disorders support group

One of the most powerful ways to cope with a Postpartum mood disorder is to connect with others going through the same experience. The PPD Support Page is a large, diverse community of families coping with Postpartum mood disorders. The women on these boards are incredibly kind and helpful. there are also sections for partners of women dealing with aPPD. They help you realize you are not alone in your struggle and explore the wide variety of treatments available for PPD.

    Aviva Romm, M.D.

When it comes to Western herbal remedies in pregnancy and for children, Aviva Romm is my go to source. Aviva was one of the first pioneers in natural birth and botanical medicine for gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics in the United States. She has truly integrated alternative and evidence-based medicine with strong grasp of the weaknesses and strengths of both. I highly recommend two of her books for expectant moms, The Natural Pregnancy Book and Naturally Healthy Babies and Children.

    Katie, the "Wellness Mama"

Wellness Mama is the #1 place I find natural cleaning recipes and simple recipes whole foods recipes that help me save some money, like "How to make coconut milk". I love her philosophy: "I’m not a doctor, a lawyer or a “health guru” – I’m just a mom who is super passionate about creating a healthy life for my family, and I’m guessing you’re a lot like me." Wellness Mama is my go to site for straight forward answers to natural living. It is a beautiful site with excellent writing.
